As many of you know, Amazing Grace is committed to the perpetual process of ‘greening our business.’ In foodservice, this can be a great challenge. You may have noticed some changes recently in our to-go cups and containers. All of our hot-drink cups, and take-out boxes are now compostable. (It is interesting...even as I type this article, the computer program does not recognize that word “compostable.”) These products will turn back into soil in about 60 days! They are made with 100% renewable resources; corn & sugarcane. After careful consideration, we have decided to go with product from a company called Eco-Products based in Boulder, CO. The company was founded in 1990 by a father/son team. They are extremely committed to the issues concerning our planet. Among their efforts is their facility, which has a 49KW solar power system which provides approximately 75% of the energy needed daily. They are partnered with CO2 Neutral (a clean burning/biodiesel fleet) to reduce carbon emissions. “The emissions from transport of raw materials and finished goods accounts for approximately 12% of the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with (our) product.” (quoted from ecoproducts.com) They are also active in offsetting their carbon footprint. Each year they purchase a number of Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) to offset their carbon footprint from Renewable Choice Energy. For more information about this company and their efforts, please visit their website, ecoproducts.com. “As per usual” (as Marcie would say), there have been a couple hurdles in this endeavor. One of them is simply ordering these new products and not being 100% sure of what is gonna be delivered to us. For example, the to-go boxes have great durability, but not such a great size/shape...so, we will go for the bigger one next order. Another hurdle is, of course, the cost. These products cannot be ordered directly from the company unless in huge quantities, thus, we have to buy through a distributor. Which ends up in a higher price for us, and regrettably, a bit higher price for our customers. We have built this into the cost of our products, and since you’re payin’ for it, I thought that it’s only right to educate you as to part of the reason WHY you are payin’ for it! There are more changes to come here. This summer, we hope to have 100% compostable to-go plastic cups (cold drink) and cutlery. We also are happy that the company we have chosen will have compostable lids for the cups by then (until then, please remember to RECYCLE the lids). We are continuously looking for more ways that we are able to green our business. We welcome any thoughts or ideas on the subject, and encourage you to think of how you may be able to do the same at your work place and home. “Some day the earth will weep, she will beg for her life, she will cry with tears of blood. You will make a choice, if you will help her or let her die, and when she dies, you will die too.” John Hollow Horn, Oglala Lakota 1932
